William Saliba is set to miss the next fortnight of Saint-Etienne fixtures with injury, after picking up a problem against AS Monaco.

We recently brought you a report from Saint-Etienne journalist Chloe Gallot of Ultimo Diez on Saliba’s performance against Monaco, but what we didn’t know at the time was that the defender had picked up an injury.

We spoke to Chloe again about the problem, and she explained that the initial reports were of a broken metatarsus leaving Saliba on the sidelines for a couple of weeks. However, it seems the problem has since reportedly been downgraded to a ‘small tear’.

There’s no official report from the club on the length of Saliba’s absence, or even the exact nature of the problem, but he is certainly set to miss Saint-Etienne’s Europa League match on Thursday night.

It’s a huge blow for Saint-Etienne, as the team have earned 2.6 points per game playing with him and only 0.7 without him. For Arsenal fans, it will spark some worries about the defender’s ability to stay fit, having only recently returned from a different injury.

There’s no doubting the centre-back’s ability when he is on the pitch, so let’s keep our fingers crossed that he’s back on it soon and consistently for the remainder of the campaign.

Many thanks to Chloe Gallot of Ultimo Diez for the update.
