David Luiz has suggested it’s no surprise to him that Gabriel Martinelli has been successful at Arsenal so far, given his attitude and upbringing.
Gabriel Martinelli won Arsenal’s Player of the Month award for October after scoring five goals and assisting one in five appearances for the club last month.
Add the couple of goals Martinelli got against Nottingham Forest in September and he’s actually the second-top scorer at the club right now, only behind Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang.
David Luiz says the youngster has ‘something different’ about him, and he’s looking forward to great things from the teenager if he stays on track. The defender also suggested Martinelli’s background has played a part in his success so far.
“I began admiring him for his work, mentality, his football, and his desire to learn every day,” David Luiz said. “I’ve had the chance to meet many players, many young talents from several different countries, and Gabi has something different.
“If he keeps it up, he will experience great things in football. I think that is what has surprised me so far.
“I met his parents, it’s not a coincidence that he has been successful. His upbringing had education, purpose, and it’s a great pleasure to be here with Gabriel.
“He welcomed me here, he was here before me. We try to have the best possible relationship, we help each other out.”
With Alexandre Lacazette returning from injury, it’s not necessarily going to be easy for Martinelli to get chances in the Premier League. For the time being, however, he still has the end of the Europa League group stage for opportunities to prove himself.
Arsenal face Frankfurt at the Emirates Stadium in a week on Thursday, knowing a win would secure both qualification to the knockout stages and top spot in the group. Another goal or two for Martinelli could see the job done with a game to go.
