Football Insider claim Unai Emery is in the market for midfielder reinforcements, with Granit Xhaka expected to depart despite seemingly making up with the club in the last couple of weeks.

Dominik Szoboszlai is a “genuine contender” to replace Xhaka, and Arsenal sent scouts to watch him in Hungary’s Euro 2020 qualifier against Wales.

RB Salzburg are keen to hold onto the midfielder, though they know they’ll face a fight to do so if they can’t progress beyond the Champions League group stage. That’s far from an easy task with Liverpool and Napoli five and four points clear of them with two games remaining.

Hungary ended up losing to Wales in their qualifier, though Szoboszlai played 90 minutes, so the scouts should have been able to get a good look at him.

The 19-year-old has four goals and four assists in 16 club games this season, though he has been in and out of the starting lineup in the league for his club. He’s only started six of their 14 games so far, coming off the bench in a further four.

If Xhaka really is on the way out, it could be a rare opportunity for a teenager like Szoboszlai to join a club like Arsenal without a significant reduction in game time. It’s worth keeping an eye on how the Swiss midfielder’s situation develops as a starting point.
