“There were a lot of interesting different elements about the Frankfurt game from an Arsenal perspective,” he said not long after Arsenal had won 3-0 in the Europa League. “I mean, yes, the fact that they didn’t convert any of their chances.

“But part of that was down to Emiliano Martinez, who was fresh off the back of saying how he thinks he’s good enough to be number one and wants to take the number one shirt from Bernd Leno, putting in a very good performance.

“What was also positive as a comparison to last season, and this is not to decry Petr Cech at all who is obviously a very fine goalkeeper. Even towards the end some of the aspects of his game were still very very strong. But Martinez is more of a similar type of goalkeeper to Leno.

“He’s certainly very comfortable with the ball at his feet, a good distributor, generally sort of proactive, and he likes coming off his line.

“These are the things Cech was not necessarily so strong at, despite his positioning and his aerial ability, so it means our relationship between our goalkeeper and our defenders can be a bit more seamless.”
