Matteo Guendouzi provided an assist for the France u21s as they thrashed Azerbaijan 5-0 in their Euro u21 qualifier on Thursday.

After he received a call-up for the French senior national side last month – without actually featuring on the pitch for his debut – Matteo Guendouzi returned to the u21s for the October fixtures.

The Arsenal midfielder has been in great form for the Gunners, but France have a lot of quality in midfield areas, so there’s no rush to promote him. Attacking-midfielder Houssem Aouar has been in similarly electric form for his club recently but the 21-year-old also started for the u21s on Thursday, so it’s not just Guendouzi.

Arsenal’s Player of the Month for September helped France u21s to secure a 5-0 win over Azerbaijan, setting up the second goal of the match. Though Odsonne Edouard still had a lot of work to do when he received the ball, there was no denying the quality of the pass from Guendouzi.

Eventually, you feel Guendouzi will be doing the same thing for the senior side, just as he is with Arsenal at the moment. There’s no problem taking things step-by-step with someone who only turned 20 in April though.
