The Arsenal squad generally want Granit Xhaka to remain as captain, despite his confrontation with the Emirates Stadium crowd on Sunday.

Granit Xhaka’s substitution against Crystal Palace was sarcastically cheered, and his response was to purposefully walk slowly off the field despite Arsenal needing a goal.

The resulting jeers from the crowd drew the midfielder to egg them on, cupping his ear, gesturing for them to get louder and mouthing “f**k off”, before removing his shirt and walking down the tunnel.

Despite all the drama around the incident, The Times report that the players believe Xhaka should continue in his post as captain, after voting for him to receive the armband in their ballot last month.

The player is expected to be fined, after meeting club technical director Edu and head coach Unai Emery yesterday, but the issue of the captaincy is still to be clarified publically. The Telegraph report that Unai Emery will address the issue on Tuesday, presumably in his pre-Liverpool press conference.
