Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang has missed out on the PFA Fans Player of the Month award for September, but he’s still up for another award for the same month.

Liverpool confirmed on Monday that Joel Matip had been named the PFA Fans’ Premier League Player of the Month for September, after an online vote. Matip helped his team to three wins in the month, keeping a clean sheet against Sheffield United and conceding once against Newcastle United and Chelsea.

This isn’t the only Player of the Month award. The Premier League also run a more popular award with EA Sports, just to make things confusing. Matip wasn’t even nominated for that one.

It’s still a bit disappointing to see Aubameyang miss out on the first award. The striker scored five goals in four games in September and all of them were important, for different reasons.

Against Tottenham Hotspur and Manchester United, he scored the equalising goal in draws, winning his team both points against big-six rivals. He also scored the winner against Aston Villa for 10-man Arsenal, despite giving up a penalty to teammate Nicolas Pepe.

Aubameyang also scored twice to give Arsenal a two-goal lead against Watford, and he could hardly be blamed for what followed in that match.

Individually, it was a fantastic month for the Gabon international, who mostly fed on scraps to drag his team to pretty much every point they earned. It’s hard to see how Matip’s performances compare, as good as they were.

Go and vote for Aubameyang in the EA award, he deserves it!
