Danny Welbeck has been ruled out for ‘probably months’ after picking up a hamstring injury just minutes into Watford’s game against Tottenham at the weekend.

“It’s bad news about Danny Welbeck,” manager Quique Sanchez Flores said.

“We need to check a little bit more what happens in the next weeks. We have no idea [how long he will be out] but it’s probably months.”

It is a cruel blow to a player who has already suffered so many injuries but perhaps not an surprising one. All you have to do is think of the hamstring problems Aaron Ramsey still continues to suffer after his serious injury or the problems inflicted on Abou Diaby to know that Welbeck’s troubles are far from over.

Sadly, it seemed like a serious hamstring problem at the time given the way he limped off.

Welbeck has managed just 391 minutes for Watford this season, with one goal coming in the EFL Cup against Swansea.

Watford’s game against Tottenham finished 1-1 with the VAR operators integral to the result. They refused to give Watford a clear penalty and then allowed Spurs’ equaliser to stand despite a handball.

The loss of Welbeck is just another blow for the Hornets from what was an unfortunate weekend when luck was definitely not on their side.
