Unai Emery has been named in Tribuna’s top-20 coaches in Europe, despite some struggles in recent matches.

Tribuna placed Emery 14th in their top 20, claiming their power rankings are based on “thorough analysis of various methods and techniques (ranging from purely mathematical approaches to expert views) used by highly reputable sources”.

Whatever that means, it’s encouraging to see Emery at least making the top 15, though it’s also a little surprising.

A defeat to Liverpool at Anfield and a draw to Tottenham Hotspur is by no means the end of the world, even if Arsenal fans were hoping for more from a game at home to their local rivals. Still, the recent form of Emery’s Arsenal isn’t exactly too impressive.

In the Premier League, Arsenal have won 11 of their last 20 games. They were more successful in Europe for a time, before being embarrassed in the Europa League final. There were also early exits for the team in both cup competitions last season.

The early signs in the new season are mostly more positive, and Arsenal at least have a small lead over Manchester United, Tottenham Hotspur and Chelsea at this stage. It’s completely fair to ask for a little time for a coach to settle and make a few signings of their own.

Emery is going to need to achieve more in his second year at Arsenal to convince the wider population that he deserves a spot among the continent’s top coaches though.
