David Luiz believes Gabriel Martinelli has the potential to become a fantastic player in the future, adding that he hopes to pass on some of his experience to the teenager.
Martinelli had a fast start to life with Arsenal. Soon after joining the club, he was called up to the first-team tour of the USA, where he started and scored in the first game against Colorado Rapids.
After that, the 18-year-old’s appearances were a bit more limited, but he still caught the eye in brief cameo appearances. His run against Fiorentina went viral, whilst his disallowed effort against Lyon and narrow volleyed miss in Barcelona could have been goals on another day.
Clearly, Unai Emery was impressed, as he named Martinelli in his Premier League squad facing Newcastle. Not only that, but he brought the youngster on towards the end of the game for his debut.
On Tuesday night, the football-watching world got a proper introduction to the teenager as he scored Arsenal’s first and last goals against Nottingham Forest.
Emery isn’t the only one to have spotted Martinelli’s talent, though, and the player’s countryman David Luiz admitted his reputation is fast growing.
“He is a young player, he’s talented and everyone speaks very well about him,” Luiz told Arsenal back in August “Everyone is excited because they know he has the potential to become a fantastic player soon and in the future.
“It will be good to work with him, try to help him and also give him a bit of my experience in football around the world. I hope we both can do big things here.”
Martinelli is sure to be pleased with Luiz’s arrival, given the centre-back’s high-profile status back in Brazil.
The former Chelsea defender should be able to help Martinelli settle in London, and give him help with any translations. That will undoubtedly aid the player’s adjustment to life with Arsenal.
