Bernd Leno says Arsenal are the premier club in London, ahead of Chelsea and Tottenham Hotspur around the world.
Speaking to the German media over the international break this week, Leno was asked about how he’d compare his old club Bayer Leverkusen with his new one, Arsenal. The goalkeeper stressed that there was no point judging them against one another.
“You can’t compare that,” Leno responded (via Sport Witness). “Of course, Arsenal is a world club, THE club here in London. Not Chelsea, not Tottenham – Arsenal is the club here with fans around the world.
“No matter where we are, also in the USA or in Asia, there are many fans of Arsenal everywhere.”
It’s nice Arsenal now have a goalkeeper who understands the London hierarchy, rather than itching to make the switch to Stamford Bridge.
Leno has made 40 appearances for Arsenal so far, but this is his first proper season as the number one goalkeeper at the club.
The German has started all four Premier League matches so far, keeping one clean sheet against Newcastle. He’ll be disappointed with Tottenham Hotspur’s first goal in the recent North London derby, but he did also make a fantastic save from Son to keep Arsenal in the game.
Emi Martinez is likely to take over for the Europa League and League Cup this month, and it remains to be seen if the Argentine goalkeeper can mount a significant challenge for the number one spot. That competition will surely keep Leno on his toes.
