Arsenal have named just 20 players in their 25-man Premier League squad for this season, but 49 under-21s to make up the numbers.

As per the Premier League rules, you’re allowed to name up to 25 senior players in your squad each season. Only a maximum of 17 of these can be non-homegrown. You’re also allowed an unlimited number of u21 players.

A ‘homegrown’ player is one who, regardless of age or nationality, has been registered with an FA (or FA of Wales) club for three entire seasons, or 36 months, before the end of the season during which he turns 21.

Arsenal have only named 20 senior players in their latest squad, six of whom are homegrown: Bellerin, Chambers, Holding, Macey, Maitland-Niles and Martinez. Kieran Tierney doesn’t count, as it has to be an English or Welsh club you’re registered to, not Scottish.

The remaining 14 players are non-homegrown, meaning Arsenal are free to sign three more non-homegrown players in January without selling, if they wish. That would potentially become a problem next summer though, with loanees returning (notably Mkhitaryan and Elneny).

Arsenal have included all of their u21 loanees in their u21 player PL squad list, including new signing William Saliba.

There is some speculation this is to try and secure Saliba homegrown status, but this is unlikely to fit within the rules and is unconfirmed at this stage. We’re looking into it, and will provide an update when we have one.
