Xavier Amaechi made his debut for Hamburg on Sunday, coming off the bench in a DFB Pokal game against Chemnitzer FC.
Amaechi completed a £2.25m move from Arsenal to Hamburg this summer, with an additional several million in performance-related add-ons and a sell-on clause in his contract with the German club.
The 18-year-old turned down a number of offers from around Europe to join Hamburg, as well as an Arsenal contract extension. He saw Hamburg as the perfect place to continue his development, with guarantees of game time he wouldn’t get elsewhere.
Amaechi earned the first competitive minutes of his career on Sunday, coming on in extra time in a DFB Pokal match against Chemnitzer FC. Hamburg ended up winning the match on penalties, after drawing 2-2 in the first 120 minutes.
Funnily enough, Amaechi will have the chance to make his league debut against VfL Bochum on Friday. Arsenal loanee Jordi Osei-Tutu – Amaechi’s u23 teammate from last season – is likely to start for the opposition, which could make things interesting.
