Mostly, Unai Emery underwhelmed last season, so what can we can we learn from his second seasons at other clubs?

That’s, perhaps, not all his fault given the steaming pile of dogsh*te he was left and the reorganisation that needed to go on at every level, but I don’t think it’s unreasonable to say we expected a little more from him and the side last season.

This campaign, he’s had another transfer window, things are much more stable, and he’s got to shift on another batch of players deemed deadwood. All signs are positive for a good season and fans are rightly allowing themselves to feel somewhat optimistic.

Looking at Emery’s record at his previous two clubs, Arsenal fans would be right to set aside their hard-earned pessimism, at least temporarily.

Unai, it seems, like to start adding trophies to his cabinet in his second season.

At Sevilla, he finished fifth in La Liga in his first two seasons but in his second term he also won the Europa League.

At PSG, he finished second in his first season before winning a domestic treble in his second.

It seems Emery is happy to demonstrate patience with his players for the first 12 months as everybody gets familiar with the new way of doing things before wielding the axe for the second.

He isn’t doing too badly on that front, with only Shkodran Mustafi remaining at the club from the list of players we’d like to get rid of as a matter of urgency,

If he can get his remaining charges to deliver on the pitch, we could well be celebrating some silverware at the end of the season.

If we’re not, Arsenal will face the difficult question of Emery’s contract and whether they activate the option for a third year or let him leave and try somebody else.
