Mesut Özil’s agent has insisted the player will remain with the club despite missing out on their trip to Liverpool last Saturday.

As things stand, Özil is yet to feature in a competitive match for Arsenal this season.

After appearing in a number of pre-season games on tour of the USA, the German saw the latter stages of his preparation disrupted by off-field events, meaning he wasn’t ready for the opening-day trip to Newcastle.

The next week against Burnley, the suggestion was that he hadn’t featured sufficiently in training to be match-ready. After another absence from the Liverpool squad on Saturday, however, it’s hard to see the justification for his continued time off.

Özil is back in training, he should be fit for selection, and Arsenal have given very little explanation for why he’s not being picked.

The player’s agent insists it’s not related to a potential transfer, reportedly informing Turkish-Football that his client will remain with Arsenal this summer.

Perhaps Emery just didn’t want to bring the 30-year-old back into the fold in such a tough away game, but it’s hard to argue that when Nicolas Pepe was given his full debut on the same day. Sead Kolasinac has also been in the last couple of squads after facing the same issues as Özil away from the pitch.

It will certainly be interesting to see if Özil is involved against Spurs on Sunday.
