Former Arsenal keeper and World Cup star, Sari van Veenendaal, has signed for Atletico Madrid after being without a club all summer.
The 29-year-old was voted Goalkeeper of the 2019 World Cup in France, helping her side reach the final where they unfortunately lost 2-0 to the USA.
After leaving Arsenal at the end of the season, van Veenendaal decided she would not make a decision on her next club until the end of the World Cup so she could fully focus on her country.
“I have spoken with several clubs and the story of Atlético Madrid suits me best”, van Veenendaal said.
“That choice [to wait] worked out well and after the tournament I thought carefully about a new step in my career.
“Atlético has proven itself in women’s football for years.
“Atlético offers me all the conditions to further develop myself as a goalkeeper. That is ultimately what counts. I am looking forward to getting started here.”

According to the report in Voetbal Primeur, van Veenedaal did not want to renew her contract with Arsenal after spending four years at the club, winning a league title, an FA Cup and two Conti Cups.
By the end of her time at the club she had lost her place to Pauline Peyraud-Magnin.
We wish her all the best during her time with Atletico.
