According to SportDay (via Tromaktiko), Panathinaikos are looking for defensive additions, with Mavropanos their current target. Sporting director Nikos Dabizas is currently in the UK on the hunt for signings, and he’s already made first contact with the defender.

AEK Athens are also interested, with both clubs trying to bring in the 21-year-old on loan. TO10 claim Arsenal are ‘likely to agree’ to this.

A number of outlets reporting on the rumour claim Mavropanos has ‘not managed to convince Unai Emery to trust him’, which is a little harsh, considering the centre-back has mostly been injured.

Even now in pre-season, the only reason Mavropanos isn’t playing is that he’s suffered yet another injury setback.

If the Greek defender could get fit and go out on loan to play regularly for the season, that would probably be the best thing for him. It’s possible inconsistent game time is contributing to his fitness problems and more regular football would help.

For now, Mavropanos is continuing his rehabilitation alongside the likes of Rob Holding and Hector Bellerin.
