The 33-year-old has been on Real Sociedad’s ‘most wanted’ list for a while now and it seemed as if the club could be open to selling him should the right offer arrive. The player doesn’t want that to happen and it looks like Monreal will be leaving next summer for free instead.

“That’s all rumours,” he said. “I belong at Arsenal. I still have a contract.

“My idea is to stay here.

“It’s a great club and I feel really comfortable playing for Arsenal. My idea is to continue playing here.”

He also confirmed his preferred position for anyone still in doubt: “My position has always been left-back, this is the position I enjoy most,” Monreal said.

“Football is changing, obviously sometimes our centre-backs have got injured in the last few years and the manager has decided I have to play in that position.

“That’s what I did but my position, and where I enjoy playing, is left-back.”

About Koscielny, who refused to travel to the States as he tries to force a move away from the club this summer, Monreal added,

“We respect Laurent. He has played for Arsenal for a long time and he is our captain.

“What I would like to see is that they fix the problem between them. And I think they will do that.

“Can he still carry on at Arsenal? Yeah, why not?”

Arsenal face Colorado Rapids at 2am (UK time) tomorrow morning before playing Bayern Munich at 4am on Thursday.
