Jensen started his role on 1 July but it only came to light that he was doing the job when he spoke to a papers in Denmark and Norway and that was then picked up by the UK tabloids.

Jensen is, of course, most famous for his solitary goal during his time at Arsenal which saw him make 113 appearances.

That goal prompted the production of an ‘I was there’ tshirt.

He also won the FA Cup with us in 1993 and the Euros with his country in 1992.

Jensen, now 54, told Danish newspaper Ekstra Bladet: “It is true that I have to work for Arsenal. On July 1, I started my job as head coach for the club in Scandinavia.

“Initially, I need to find talents for the club’s academy, but in the long term I hope to contribute with scouting players for the Premier League squad.

“After more than 20 years as a coach, I feel that I have my finger on the pulse of the football industry.

“Since I stopped in Fremad Amager, I have worked a little for an agent company in the USA, where I have scouted players in Europe and especially Scandinavia.

“It has been extremely exciting. Now I continue on the same track with a focus on the young talents.

“There is a new trend where the clubs pick up the young talents very early today. They do it so they can shape themselves.

“The competition is therefore great, and that means that we must have followed the talents from maybe 12-13 years to assess whether they are ready for such a big leap that Arsenal will be when they can change clubs.”

Jensen signed for Arsenal for £1.44m from Brøndby IF in 1992 and remained at the club for four years before returning to Brøndby on a free.

He spent three years there before another free transfer saw him move to Herfølge BK where he spent another three years before retiring from football.

Since hanging up his boots he has managed Herfølge BK (where he won the Danish Superliga in 2000 and was named coach of the year), Randers FC, and Fremad Amager, been assistant at Brøndby IF (where he helped win the Danish Superliga in 2005), Getafe CF, and Blackburn Rovers.

He also enjoyed a spell as caretaker of the Denmark national team, his last role before returning to work for Arsenal.

The project at Arsenal was described as ‘comprehensive and exciting’ by the sports manager at Discovery where Jensen worked for a time as a football expert.

“We are happy on John’s behalf about the job opportunity he has now received,” Bay said. “It is both a comprehensive and exciting project. We still hope to be able to draw a little on him in connection with our coverage of the British trophy tournaments.”
