Arsenal have reportedly offered Sami Khedira a two-year contract worth €4m-a-year, some €2m short of what he currently earns for not playing at Juventus.

Arsenal were linked again with a move for Sami Khedira at the weekend before he appeared at the Emirates for the Emirates Cup match.

It was easy to dismiss his appearance as nothing more than a friend turning up to watch Mesut Ozil but the question needs to be asked – if he was there as a guest of Ozil, why was he in the director’s box and not Ozil’s?

Anyway, the 32-year-old midfielder is reportedly available this summer after only making 10 Serie A appearances last season for the Old Lady and Arsenal are said to be interested.

It seems an odd move unless there’s more to it than initially meets the eye.

Are they bringing him for his experience and, perhaps, friendship with Ozil?

Perhaps Ozil’s form and the departure of his close friend, Mathieu Flamini, are more linked than should be reasonable.

Do I really believe that? No, no I do not.

I do not believe a Premier League club would buy a player just so another has a buddy at the club.

Then again, can you think of a better reason why we would offer Khedira a contract?
