New Wolfsburg signing Xaver Schlager has admitted he’s already thinking about his ‘next goal’, which is to join Arsenal.

Last season, Schlager was playing for Red Bull Salzburg in the Austrian Bundesliga, as well as taking part in the Europa League. Salzburg were knocked out by Napoli in the last-16, one round before the Italian side faced Arsenal.

Schlager went on to help Salzburg complete a league and cup double, his sixth and seventh domestic trophies, before impressing with Austria at the u21 European Championships. Wolfsburg took notice and signed him for €15m on a four-year deal.

The 21-year-old is already planning his next transfer though, as he told Kicker (via GGFN): “I have not reached a final goal, now comes the next goal. I’ve been a fan of Arsenal since I was a kid, that’s my dream club and it’s my dream to play there.”

Despite playing for the u21s over the summer, Schlager is a full Austria international, making 11 appearances for the senior side. At club level, he scored eight goals and assisted four in 44 appearances last season.

It’s a shame Schlager narrowly missed out on a visit to the Emirates Stadium last year, given Salzburg only lost out to Napoli 4-3 on aggregate.

If the young midfielder impresses in the Bundesliga though, perhaps a move to Arsenal could be on the cards in the future.
