Xavier Amaechi was disappointed to have been left out of the final 23 for the Europa League final on Wednesday, after travelling to Baku with the rest of the first-team squad.

Amaechi joined Bukayo Saka, Eddie Nketiah, Joe Willock and Deyan Iliev in stepping up from the u23s to travel to Azerbaijan for the final. Initially, he was named in Arsenal’s final squad by the club Twitter account, but they quickly posted an update to confirm Amaechi would be replaced by Iliev in the 23.

Amaechi was the only player of the 24 that travelled to miss out, and Football.London report the decision went down poorly with the player and those close to him.

There were some claims on social media that Arsenal had no choice, as they had to include a third goalkeeper in the squad. However, Daily Cannon have confirmed with UEFA that there is no such requirement in the regulations.

Additionally, there were other players in the squad who could’ve missed out instead. For example, it surely wasn’t necessary to include two backup right-backs, Carl Jenkinson and Stephan Lichtsteiner. Arsenal are reportedly trying to move both of them on this summer, so their spots would’ve meant more to a young player like Amaechi.

Football.London claim Amaechi is drawing interest from Bayern Munich and a number of La Liga clubs, and after failing to get any first-team minutes this season he’s considering rejecting a contract extension with Arsenal. As it stands, his deal ends in 2020.
