Arsenal are not in the race to sign Markus Schubert, despite pictures of his girlfriend in the club’s shirt, according to reports.

Dirk Schlarmann, a reporter for Sky Sports in Germany, claims nothing is decided in the race for Schubert’s signature. The 21-year-old goalkeeper is out of contract with Dynamo Dresden, and free to join any team that will pay his wages this summer.

Reports surrounding a possible move to North London reached their peak on Friday, after a picture emerged of Schubert’s girlfriend wearing an Arsenal shirt.

According to Schlarmann, however, the links connecting the young German with Arsenal are wide of the mark. The SSN reporter claims the Gunners aren’t even in the race for Schubert’s signature at this stage, and Schalke are further ahead.

With Petr Cech retiring, and David Ospina’s move to Napoli seemingly only waiting on the official announcement, Arsenal do need to sort out the goalkeeper position this summer.

Bernd Leno can easily take over as number one, but Unai Emery has to choose if he wants to put faith in Emi Martinez, Matt Macey, or Deyan Iliev, or look elsewhere for a new signing as the backup goalkeeper.

Schubert is a highly-rated young keeper who wouldn’t eat into Arsenal’s transfer budget, but apparently, he’s not as close to a move as first thought.
