Nelson was left out of England’s first two games of the tournament, both of which they lost, but he was drafted in for the final group stage match against Croatia on Monday.

It took just 11 minutes for the Arsenal youngster to have a major impact, winning and then scoring a penalty to give his country the lead.

Nelson also had a part to play in England’s second goal, beating his man and standing the ball up to the back post, before a headed clearance under pressure fell to Maddison to finish.

The 19-year-old completed 91% of his passes, made a couple of tackles and clearances and completed more dribbles than anyone on the pitch other than Demarai Gray.

Between Arsenal u23s, Hoffenheim and England u21s, Nelson scored 11 goals and assisted two this season, one goal contribution every 102 minutes.

Unfortunately for England (and fortunately for Arsenal), the country are now out of the u21 Euros, meaning Nelson can finally begin his holiday.

Assuming the teenager gets four weeks off and then needs one more to get his fitness back up, he could be back in time for the Emirates Cup on 28th July.

Thanks to Arsenal’s busy pre-season schedule, there are a couple of matches after that as well, so plenty of chances to get at least one game in before the Premier League gets underway. It’s up to Nelson to take advantage of that opportunity to impress.
