Joe Willock and Eddie Nketiah started their second games in a row at the tournament, but they ended up falling to another defeat as England threw away a lead to lose 2-1 in the final three minutes of the match.

It was Willock who had initially given England the lead in the first half, scoring his second goal in two games. Unfortunately, Nketiah couldn’t add to his goal and assist from the previous match on this occasion.

Across the Arsenal first-team, the u23s, the u21s and the England u20s, Willock has 16 goals in 27 games this season, broken down as follows:

  • Arsenal first team – Six appearances, three goals
  • Arsenal u23s – 12 appearances, six goals
  • Arsenal u21s – Two appearances, three goals
  • England u20s – Seven appearances, four goals

Overall, he has a goal every 130 minutes this season, all from midfield. It’s no accident or freak run of form either, as the 19-year-old consistently picks up intelligent positions in the box and makes clever runs to arrive just as the right moment to score.

Arsenal fans have had a glimpse of that in the senior side this season, whether through his three goals against Blackpool and Vorskla, or the fact he had as many shots as any other player in the team in the Europa League final, despite playing just 12 minutes (though his finishing was off, for once).

It’s up to Unai Emery to give the youngster more chances to step up now, particularly in the absence of Aaron Ramsey.
