The story started with Swiss outlet RSI Sport, who reported that Xhaka ‘may soon be an Inter player’. They claim there has already been contact between the Arsenal midfielder and the Serie A club since the hiring of Antonio Conte, who is a fan of the 26-year-old.

Fantagazzetta in Italy also report that Xhaka is a name that interests Conte, as the new Inter head coach believes the Swiss international would be a good fit for his system. However, they add that the deal is complicated by Arsenal’s €40m valuation.

On the other hand, another Italian outlet AlfredoPedulla.com reports that there are no negotiations in progress between Inter and Arsenal over Xhaka, at least at this stage.

It definitely makes sense that Arsenal wouldn’t want to sell for less than €40m (£35.5m). The Gunners signed Xhaka for around £35m in 2016, and the midfielder is only just starting to approach his prime years. Selling at a loss wouldn’t make much sense.

Despite the constant debates on social media over his usefulness to the team, Unai Emery has stuck by Xhaka just as much as Arsene Wenger did. The player reached 40 appearances in all competitions this season, even with his injuries in 2019.

If he’s on the way out, Arsenal will want the funds to invest in a replacement.
