After some speculation that Martinez’s excellent performances for Reading might inspire a permanent departure this summer, the 26-year-old has temporarily quelled the rumours by returning to the Arsenal training centre at London Colney on Tuesday.

Martinez already confirmed last week that he’s preparing for pre-season with the club, though it remains to be seen whether he commits his future after that.

As it stands, the Argentine goalkeeper has three years left on his contract, so Arsenal wouldn’t be forced to sell. However, after so many years without giving him a real chance, you’d think the Gunners would be willing to let Martinez go if he’s not going to be able to play at all regularly again this season.

It’s possible Martinez will get his first chance to impress in the friendly match against Boreham Wood next weekend. Bernd Leno, Arthur Okonkwo and Dejan Iliev are all still on holiday as it stands, so only Tom Smith (17) is still around to compete for the spot.

On the other hand, Arsenal may decide to save him for the full first-team matches and give chances to the youth players.
