England had a disappointing showing in the Toulon Tournament, despite the two Arsenal members of the squad performing well.

Going into Tuesday’s match, Joe Willock had scored two goals in two games, whilst Eddie Nketiah had a goal and an assist in his two starts. Nonetheless, England had lost three matches in a row to finish bottom of their group.

As a result, their final game was simply a placement match, to decide their finishing position in the tournament. Willock didn’t start, earning a rest after playing and scoring in both previous games, but Nketiah kept his place up front.

The 20-year-old ended up winning and converting a first-half penalty, bringing his total for the England u20s to six goals and an assist in eight games.

The Arsenal striker also has two goals and two assists in four u21 appearances, nine goals and an assist in 10 u19 games, and four goals in two u18 games. Overall, that’s more than one goal contribution per game from the u18s to the u21s.

It’s the same story for Nketiah in club football, where he scored 10 goals and assisted four in 11 youth appearances this season.

The only trouble the youngster has had is getting senior opportunities, as he’s still only managed 458 minutes on the pitch since his debut over a year and a half ago, scoring three goals.

Another season of minimal substitute appearances is going to do nothing to help Nketiah’s career. After his 20th birthday a couple of weeks ago, he needs to shake off youth football and play regularly for a senior side, whether that’s Arsenal or a loan team.
