After yet another unsuccessful season, Arsenal fans are scratching their heads at the direction the team is going.

Unai Emery’s appointment was a breath of much-needed fresh air for the Gunners. However, there wasn’t much difference compared to Wenger’s tenure when it comes to the end result.

Sure, Arsenal played in the Europa League final, but they were thrashed by a spirited, Eden Hazard-powered Chelsea side. They also failed to end in the top 4 in the PL. Thanks to that, it’s another season of no Champions League football for Gunners fans.

The question every Arsenal fan must ask themselves is can the team fight for silverware next season? Bookies are adamant that Arsenal are well behind other favourites. City top the list just like last year, with Liverpool second. Manchester United, Chelsea, and even Tottenham are in front of Unai Emery’s side as outright favourites which isn’t great news for Arsenal fans. With Arsenal not among the major betting favourites, you stand to make a solid sum of money should they win the Premier League.

To be honest, Arsenal really aren’t in a position to be champions. Emery’s side is weaker than the competition and there’s no depth on the bench. To really be able to challenge for silverware, Arsenal need to spend, and they need to spend big.

First Stop – New Players

Before anything can be done, Emery needs to revamp the squad. Arsenal need fresh players in all areas, starting with the front. They need a deadly striker that can work with Aubameyang and an inspiring midfielder who will feed them quality balls. Furthermore, the team needs impenetrable defenders in the back line, especially as Shkodran Mustafi is most likely on the move. Barcelona’s Samuel Umtiti was mentioned as a possible signing and he is a player of great calibre.

Changes are needed in midfield as well. There’s been a lot of talk about Mesut Ozil leaving, but latest reports say that the player will stay and try his best to improve his form. If he’s back to his best, Arsenal could prove a big challenge for others. There’s no question that Ozil is a quality player, but his performances these past few seasons have been disappointing. If Emery and the club believe that Ozil can go back to his best, he’d be a midfield dynamo that can drive Arsenal’s success.

Of course, with Aaron Ramsey leaving this summer, the midfield should be reinforced with talent beside Ozil and Torreira. There are plenty of available players Arsenal could sign for a reasonable price. It’s up to the scouts, Emery, and the board to make the right decision and bring quality players as they did with Lucas Torreira last season.

Up front, the Gunners need another lethal forward to pair with Aubameyang. Lacazette surely fits the profile, but to be honest, Arsenal needs a world-beater out wide. Now, a player like that surely won’t come for cheap. There’s been a lot of talk about French league sensation Nicholas Pepe and he surely fits the profile. However, Arsenal would need to beat half of Europe for his signing, and Lille certainly won’t sell him for scraps.

If Arsenal fix the obvious leaking holes, Gunners fans can look forward to a season of success. Dreams of a PL title may be too far away right now. But, with the right choice of players, Arsenal could finish higher up the table and possibly win the Europa League. It would be the start of a renaissance that will bring back Arsenal to the place where they belong – the top.
