Arsene Wenger gave his view on the Europa League final during his punditry appearance for the Champions League final on Saturday, admitting it was a ‘sad night’.

Wenger joined up with Jose Mourinho on beIN SPORTS to report on Liverpool’s victory over Spurs this weekend, but he briefly spoke about Arsenal’s 4-1 Europa League defeat to Chelsea from earlier in the week.

“I think we did alright in the first half,” Wenger said. “In the second half, as soon as Chelsea scored the first goal, we collapsed completely. In the second half, we didn’t exist. It was a sad night for us.”

That’s certainly a fair assessment of the match. Arsenal were very much in the game in the first half, and perhaps you could even say they’d edged the best of the action at that stage. However, as soon as Olivier Giroud’s opening goal went in, they collapsed.

Even Alex Iwobi’s goal, scored with over 20 minutes to go, was quickly followed by Chelsea making it 4-1. Normally you’d expect the team that was 3-1 up to drop back and defend their lead whilst the losing side pushed for an equaliser, but Arsenal showed no such fight.

It’s nice to hear Wenger talking about Arsenal as a fan of the club though, even if there wasn’t anything positive to talk about on this occasion. He clearly still feels a close connection to the club despite his departure.
