Arsenal have made an enquiry for 22-year-old Genoa goalkeeper Andrei Radu, according to the player’s agent.

Radu’s situation with Genoa is rather unique. Technically, he’s on loan from Inter Milan, but the loan deal lasts until 2021, which is when his contract with Inter expires. The only real difference between the loan and a permanent sale to Genoa is that Inter can recall the goalkeeper if they want to, and then extend his deal or sell him on.

Crescenzo Cecere, Radu’s agent, spoke to FCInterNews about his client’s future last week. He revealed that as well as Inter and Genoa, there’s also interest in Radu from outside, including from Arsenal.

“The player is from Genoa and has a contract with I Rossoblu for another two years,” Cecere began. “Inter has a right to recall, but if they want to exercise it, it will depend only on them, and we’ll listen to them.

“There are so many teams involved, including Lyon. Recently, there was also an Arsenal enquiry. It is a very interesting prospect since he is growing a lot, from all points of view.”

Radu made 33 appearances in Serie A last season and kept six clean sheets. Genoa had a very poor campaign as a team, only avoiding relegation on goal difference, so it would unfair to judge Radu on that number too harshly.

Arsenal need a goalkeeper to replace Petr Cech in the first-team squad, of course.

It’s very possible they’ll look at internal solutions, such as bringing back Emi Martinez or promoting Deyan Iliev, but a new signing is also on the table. At this point, however, it appears the Gunners are only in the very early stages of a possible move for Radu.
