Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur have both submitted proposals for AS Roma midfielder Lorenzo Pellegrini, according to reports in Italy.

Though Pellegrini is tied down until 2022 in Italy, his contract presents any interested club with a relatively inexpensive way to sign him. The 22-year-old has a €30m release clause which is reportedly payable in two instalments, meaning only €15m would be paid this summer.

With Arsenal on the lookout for a central midfielder and on a restricted budget until they can get back into the Champions League, it’s no surprise they’re being linked with a move.

Nicolo Schira reports that Pellegrini’s agent has received offers from Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur. Calciomercato report that the agent is in London, and they add that the midfielder would be willing to join Arsenal even without Champions League football.

There is also interest from Italy, with both Inter Milan and AC Milan reportedly in the race.

Pellegrini made 33 appearances for Roma last season despite a couple of injuries, and he scored four goals and assisted seven in those matches. He creates a good amount of chances, particularly from set-pieces, and gets back to help out defensively as well.

Whether he’s the man to fill the Aaron Ramsey-shaped hole in Arsenal’s team remains to be seen.
