PAOK had already won the league unbeaten going into their cup final on Saturday, with Akpom playing a big part since the turn of the year. He struggled to get into the team at first, after completing his summer move from Arsenal. In 2019, however, he’s made 18 starts in all competitions, contributing to 11 goals in those games.

The most recent was perhaps the most important, as the striker came up with an overhead-kick winner over AEK Athens in the cup final:

Afterwards, the Arsenal academy graduate was clearly overwhelmed by the occasion, breaking down in tears whilst speaking to the media about what the win meant to him.

It’s great to see Akpom getting a real chance somewhere. PAOK will now enter the second qualifying round for the UEFA Champions League, so he’s about as likely to be in next season’s competition as Arsenal are.

If he can play regularly and keep getting key goals and assists in Greece, perhaps we’ll see Akpom back in one of Europe’s top five leagues by the end of his contract in 2021. For now, congratulations to him on his achievement, enjoy the moment!
