Not long after turning down a large offer from Arsenal, Juanfran has played his last game for Atletico Madrid.

Two months ago, Spanish outlet AS claimed Juanfran had agreed to extend his contract by an additional year if he reached 25 appearances in the league. The right-back was then on 22, meaning he only needed another three in the next month and a half.

He didn’t get them and will now leave on a free transfer according to the same publication.

In March, AS claimed that Arsenal knocked at the player’s door to try and take advantage of his expiring contract, offering him a pay increase, but the Spaniard has decided to remain with Atletico.

The article didn’t make it entirely clear when Arsenal made their offer, but it wouldn’t be surprising if it was sometime earlier in the season when Hector Bellerin was injured.

AS mention this offer again in their latest piece. They also add, “Juanfran played his last official match with Atletico.”

He is expected to be honoured at the club on Thursday.

We now know that Stephan Lichtsteiner will be leaving so perhaps Arsenal will return for the player now that they know he’s available for free.
