The Premier League announced their shortlist for the PL2 Player of the Season award this week, a year on from Arsenal’s Reiss Nelson winning the accolade for the 2017/18 campaign.

This time, there’s only one Arsenal nominee, Eddie Nketiah, despite the likes of Joe Willock and Bukayo Saka also having excellent seasons. Nketiah joins the following list of players in receiving a nomination:

Rafael Camacho (Liverpool), Aaron Connolly (Brighton), Morgan Feeney (Everton), Adam Idah (Norwich), Daniel Loader (Reading), Bassala Sambou (Everton), Will Smallbone (Southampton), Elias Sorensen (Newcastle).

The award takes into account EFL Trophy appearances as well as the PL2, so in total Nketiah has 10 goals and four assists in his 11 games that count. Of course, the 19-year-old has also made eight appearances for the first team this campaign. Check out his academy highlights below:

It’s great to see Nketiah’s efforts this season being recognised. On the other hand, if he can receive a nomination after playing fewer than half of the PL2 matches and making just one appearance in all other academy competitions, it suggests he should be playing more senior football now.
