After a couple of inconsistent seasons after his return from Bayern Munich, Gotze has started to rediscover his old form with Dortmund this campaign. The German scored seven goals and assisted seven more in 34 appearances, still just 26 years old.

As a result, Sport Bild claim Dortmund are looking to extend his contract. The World Cup winner’s current deal expires in 2020, so the Bundesliga club risk losing him for free if they can’t convince him to renew. However, Arsenal are apparently turning Gotze’s head after showing an interest in a summer move.

Arsenal are looking to replace Aaron Ramsey in the current window, and given Gotze’s contract situation he could represent a relatively low budget way to do so.

Five years ago, a cut-price deal for Gotze would’ve been a no-brainer, but the last few seasons of injury troubles and inconsistent form will leave Arsenal fans with doubts. Perhaps this season has convinced Unai Emery and his transfer team that the playmaker is still worth a gamble.
