Dejan Iliev looks set to leave Arsenal this summer with the club linked with a move for Markus Schubert on a free transfer.

Iliev

According to a report in BILD, Arsenal are interested in signing Markus Schubert from Dynamo Dresden with Illiev set to leave on a free transfer at the end of his contract this summer.

Now 24, Iliev has shown no sign of breaking through at Arsenal so it’s not surprising that the club are letting him go.

He signed for Arsenal in 2012 as an 18-year-old but has yet to play a senior game in all that time. He hasn’t even been out on loan. In fact, he’s played only 47 games in the last seven years, shipping 74 goals and keeping 13 cleansheets.

Injuries, of course, have played their part in keeping him sidelined but questions abounded when he was handed a new deal back in 2015 and none of them have been answered.

Schubert, meanwhile, made 43 appearances for the second-tier German club, keeping 12 clean sheets. His performances earned him call-ups to every German national side up to the u21s, so he’s clearly highly thought of in his home country.

Whether Schubert would accept being the third choice at Arsenal remains to be seen. If he wants to compete for a starting spot, that would surely force Emi Martinez out the door, given the Argentine has made it clear he’ll only stay if he has the opportunity to become number one himself.
