Shkodran Mustafi poked fun at himself after a truly awful cross in Arsenal’s 2-0 victory over Newcastle United on Monday night.

Defensively, Mustafi had a pretty solid game for Arsenal against Newcastle, which would have pleased some of his critics. Unfortunately, he wasn’t nearly so impressive in possession, giving the ball away a number of times with inaccurate short passes in dangerous areas.

He looked to have found his feet at one point, racing past a couple of opponents and getting into position for a cross, only to balloon the ball so far wide and over the bar that it drew cheers from the Arsenal crowd.

Thankfully, the German was willing to troll himself over the cross, posting on Instagram “you can still see the [earth] so it was not that far from the second post” along with a mocked-up picture of an astronaut with the ball on the moon.

Arsenal fans aren’t going to mind so much if Mustafi and the rest of the team make a few mistakes whilst also keeping a clean sheet and winning the match. It’s when they give away sloppy penalties to mess up leads in North London derbies that they really get annoyed about it.

On this occasion, it was probably a smart idea to just admit the mistake, laugh about it and move on.
