Before Wolves, Bernd Leno believed Arsenal could finish in the top four despite there only being a handful of games left and Arsenal being unable to stop playing like morons.

After the defeat at home to Crystal Palace, Arsenal really needed to get a win at Wolves which was always going to be a big ask for a side who have relegation form when it comes to playing outside Ashburton Grove.

Leno’s comments came before Arsenal faced Wolves on Wednesday night and Tottenham grabbed all three points against Brighton, who were unlucky not to seal a point at White Hart Lane, a ground that has yet to be filled to capacity. They were optimistic words, even then, given Arsenal’s remaining fixtures.

“[It will be] Manchester City first, because Liverpool also have the Champions League, so maybe they will lose some power and energy from that,” Leno said. “I believe they have a realistic chance against Barcelona, it’s 50-50, but City only have the FA Cup final and the Premier League.

“I think at the end it will then be us and Tottenham.

“I believe in our quality and we have everything in our own hands. I don’t mind about the other teams though, if we are in the top four everything is OK for me!”

That might have made sense before the latest round of fixtures but Arsenal now find themselves in fifth place with the top four out of their own hands, thanks in no small way to Leno’s awful performance at Molineaux.

Ahead of the game against Watford, I calculated that Arenal had seven cup finals left this season as they chase that shiny Champions League qualification trophy. Five of them were away. Taking just the league games, if Arsenal stayed true to form, they would win one of them. That was the game at Watford.

Arsenal have played 36 league games away from home over the last two seasons. They have won just 10 giving them a points total of 30 from what is almost a full season of away matches. Cardiff City are currently in the relegation zone with 31 points this season.

Arsenal still have to travel to Leicester and Burnley where form tells us they will get nothing.
