Arsenal have now committed 13 errors leading to an opposition goal in the Premier League this season, the most of any team in the division.

Arsenal boosted their tally by three this week, as Shkodran Mustafi decided not to defend against Wilfried Zaha, Bernd Leno came and flapped at a cross to concede and Granit Xhaka lobbed his own player to set Diogo Jota free.

As a result, Arsenal are now out ahead on their own in terms of errors leading to goals. They had been level with AFC Bournemouth and Fulham on 11, a few ahead of Cardiff City and Huddersfield Town on eight, but none of those bottom-half teams added to their tallies in their recent fixtures.

It’s always tempting to point at one player as the problem when a stat like this comes out, but plenty of players have contributed to the season total. Bernd Leno, Granit Xhaka, Matteo Guendouzi, Alex Iwobi, Sead Kolasinac, Stephan Lichtsteiner and Shkodran Mustafi have all made mistakes leading to goals in the league alone.

Add in Hector Bellerin, Petr Cech, Lucas Torreira, Ainsley Maitland-Niles and Sokratis Papastathopoulos for Arsenal players who have made errors leading to shots this season, who were just lucky those shots didn’t go in. Rob Holding and Mohamed Elneny deserve mentions too if you include the Europa League.

Clearly, this is something Arsenal need to cut back on if they’re going to have any chance of winning trophies and challenging anywhere near the top of the Premier League. Exactly how to prevent individual errors, when most of the squad have made at least one or two, is up to Unai Emery to figure out.
