OwnGoalNigeria report that FC Porto have already decided they won’t be signing loan midfielder Nwakali on a permanent deal this summer. They were hoping he’d progress from their B team to the first team over the year to trigger a permanent move, but that hasn’t happened.

Instead, the 20-year-old will return to Arsenal with two years on his deal and a decision to make over what to do next.

It’s true that Nwakali hasn’t really progressed as hoped so far this season. For most of 2018, he struggled to get into the Porto B team at all, only making seven appearances in their first 14 matches, and more than half of those from the bench.

That changed in the new year, with a run of seven consecutive appearances, but this month he’s dropped out of the squad again. So far he’s also failed to receive a senior call-up.

The midfielder is still young, and perhaps he just hasn’t found the right team to play to his strengths just yet. It’s clear that’s not Porto though, so it’s no surprise they aren’t planning to keep him.
