With just a couple of months left of the 2018/19 season, let’s have a look at Arsenal’s top five players of the campaign according to the stats.

Football website WhoScored give a rating to each individual player in every match based on a number of stats, which they then average out over the entire season to give an overall rating. Here are Arsenal’s top five for 2018/19:

5Petr Cech (7.05)

This one probably comes as a bit of a surprise. It’s likely in part because of Cech’s limited minutes over the season, meaning the few games he started had greater weight to them. Nonetheless, clearly, the goalkeeper performed well in those matches. There’s no doubt that he had to make a tonne of saves in the early part of the season.

4Granit Xhaka (7.06)

With new midfield partners in Matteo Guendouzi and Lucas Torreira, Xhaka has elevated his game to the next level this season. He’s still making the occasional mistake, so he has room for improvement, but he’s taking control of games and has become a crucial part of Arsenal’s build-up play.

The 26-year-old is providing more cover defensively than before, and he’s even chipped in with a few important goals. Plus, he’s shown fantastic leadership in recent months.

3Laurent Koscielny (7.06)

Koscielny may have taken a game or two to get back into the swing of things after his long-term injury, but right now he’s playing some of his best football. Arsenal’s defence looks hugely improved whenever he’s in it, and they’re finally starting to keep some clean sheets with his help.

The Frenchman is also adding something in possession, as he has the second-highest Premier League pass accuracy in the entire squad.

2Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang (7.08)

Arsenal’s record signing has been back scoring again this year, with his 17 league goals putting him just one behind the league leader Sergio Aguero. The striker has had to adapt to playing a couple of different positions and in a number of formations, but that hasn’t stopped him doing what he does best.

Aubameyang has also had some particularly memorable moments in the last few months. There was his brace against Tottenham Hotspur in the 4-2 victory, his two goals in two games against Manchester United at the Emirates Stadium, as well as his starring role in Arsenal’s last-16 Europa League comeback victory last week.

1Alexandre Lacazette (7.20)

Aubameyang might be stealing the headlines on the goalscoring front, but Lacazette has had a fantastic second season with Arsenal so far. The striker has 14 goals and nine assists in all competitions, as well as winning an important penalty against Manchester United in the last match.

Lacazette creates chances, he scores goals, he holds the ball up well, and he even makes a strong defensive contribution to the team. Only five players in Arsenal’s squad have made more tackles than the centre-forward this season. It’s no surprise he’s becoming such a fan-favourite.
