In recent weeks, Arsenal have become the best-positioned club to sign Nicolas Tagliafico from Ajax, according to reports in Spain.

Marca write that Real Madrid, Atletico Madrid and Arsenal are all interested in the left-back, particularly after his recent performances against Real in the Champions League. Of the three, Unai Emery’s side is ‘the best positioned’ in recent weeks to make the signing, the Spanish outlet claim.

Reports at the weekend from the Mail on Sunday suggested Arsenal ‘remain in the hunt’ for a new left-back, though they also noted the competition from Atletico Madrid. Ajax would reportedly be willing to sell the 26-year-old for around £8m, after buying him for less than half of that fee just over a year ago.

Late last month, Fox Sports journalist Martin Liberman claimed Arsenal were willing to pay Tagliafico’s release clause, though he didn’t specify what the clause is. According to the Argentinian reporter, the Gunners were prepared to offer an ‘irresistible’ contract to the defender.

At this stage, there’s still no confirmation that Nacho Monreal has activated his year-long contract option to stay at the club until 2020, so it’s very possible he ends up leaving this summer. That could be the case even if he extends, as it’s Arsenal’s last chance to cash in on the 33-year-old.

If they do so, Tagliafico would make a good replacement, given his strong performances and the fact he already has experience of football at the top level. The Argentine international has five goals and five assists in 31 appearances this campaign.
