Tony Adams believes that Alex Iwobi should not have started against Manchester City.

It took Sergio Aguero less than 60 seconds to put Arsenal a goal down thanks to some Grade A idiocy on the edge of our own box from Alex Iwobi.

Given the ball, he had plenty of time and more than enough space to clear it but he decided to try and dribble it out of defence, lost it and Arsenal lost the game before a minute was on the clock.

To be fair to Iwobi, Arsenal were always going to lose this game, but they didn’t need to make it so easy for Pep Guardiola’s men who had a real point to prove on the day.

“I would have played Aaron Ramsey in midfield because he would have offered some solidity to the team in midfield not Iwobi,” Adams said.

“Against Manchester United, Arsenal were too open and were duly punished in a swift counter-attack in which Iwobi came on and I don’t think he will be good in this formation particularly against City.”

Iwobi is certainly a frustrating player.

Capable of flashes of brilliance, his decision-making at times should be better given his experience at the top level despite his tender age.
