The January transfer window is now open, sparking plenty of talk about who Arsenal could sign this month, but there are also suggestions that one or two might be on the way out.
Football.London put together a report on Arsenal’s expected transfer activity this month, and they mentioned four senior stars who could depart permanently in January. Let’s have a look at each of them:
Mohamed Elneny

- Age: 26
- Contract Until: 2022
- Position: Defensive Midfield
- Estimated Transfer Value: £9m
Football.London claim Elneny is expected to be made available this month, after playing just 59 minutes of Premier League football this season.
The Egyptian midfielder has had more luck in the Europa League and the League Cup, making six starts and providing one assist, with Arsenal winning all six matches. However, that’s still not exactly what you’d describe as ‘regular’ football.
According to the report, Leicester could ‘revive their pursuit’ of Elneny, with Vicente Iborra seemingly on the way out. The Foxes previously agreed a £10m deal for the Arsenal man in 2017, but the player himself eventually decided to turn it down.
Elneny has always given his all for Arsenal, and he appears to provide a positive influence in the dressing room. On the pitch, his influence is wavering, so perhaps a move would be the best thing for his career.

Carl Jenkinson

- Age: 26
- Contract Until: 2020
- Position: Right-Back
- Estimated Transfer Value: £2.25m
Jenkinson has made even fewer appearances than Elneny this season, though this is partially due to an ankle injury he suffered at the start of the campaign. After making his return in the League Cup, he made one start at left-back, one at centre-back and one at right-back in Arsenal’s Europa League group stage, filling in wherever he was needed.
Football.London write that he’s ‘free to leave’ this month, despite showing some improvement in his minimal appearances so far. With Ainsley Maitland-Niles playing at right-back/wing-back lately, as well as Stephan Lichtsteiner and Hector Bellerin, it certainly seems like Jenkinson isn’t going to get many chances.
The England international did appear close to leaving the club over the summer, but the aforementioned injury prevented that from happening. We’ll see if there’s any interest in him this month.

David Ospina

- Age: 30
- Contract Until: 2020
- Position: Goalkeeper
- Estimated Transfer Value: £4.5m
David Ospina is likely to make his loan move to Napoli permanent, which could well happen this month.
Il Mattino (via TuttoMercatoWeb) report that Napoli could activate their option-to-buy in the winter window, despite having until the summer to make a decision.
The £3.15m option in Ospina’s contract with the club becomes compulsory if the Colombian makes 25 appearances, which means he only has 10 left to go between now and the end of the season before the Serie A side have no choice anyway.
That’s not a problem for Napoli though, as they’ve found Ospina to be ‘absolutely reliable’, aside from one mistake against Liverpool. He’s convinced both the club and the fans to want him to stick around beyond the end of this season.
From an Arsenal point of view, it’s better to move the goalkeeper on, because he clearly wasn’t happy playing second-fiddle in North London. If he couldn’t get into the team ahead of Petr Cech, he’s unlikely to manage it now that Bernd Leno has joined as well.

Cohen Bramall

- Age: 22
- Contract Until: 2019
- Position: Left-Back
- Estimated Transfer Value: £225k
Cohen Bramall’s contract expires at the end of the season, and Football.London call him the most notable young player who could be moved on this month. Coming up from non-league Hednesford Town to Arsenal, Bramall is still yet to make a senior appearance for the side.
Another who struggled with injury problems earlier in the campaign, Bramall has made seven appearances for the u23s and the u21s this season. He’s looked bright at times, particularly in the Checkatrade Trophy win over Forest Green Rovers.
However, it hasn’t been enough to earn him a call-up to the senior squad, even with all of Arsenal’s left-back injuries. It seems like it’s only a matter of time before he leaves the club now, but hopefully still at a club that would mark a step up from Hednesford Town.
What about Aaron Ramsey?
Despite all the speculation around Ramsey’s potential move to Juventus, the report claims that he won’t leave this month. Arsenal would prefer to get another six months out of the midfielder on the pitch than pick up whatever fee the Italian club would offer to complete a deal now.
