AS Monaco are trying to rid themselves of Youri Tielemans, with an unnamed English club showing interest, according to reports in France.
Get French Football News report that their sources have informed them that returning Monaco boss Leonardo Jardim is actively seeking to move Tielemans on this month. The manager reportedly wasn’t a fan of the player during his previous spell at the club.
L’Equipe (via GFFN) claim Jorge Mendes is trying to negotiate a loan swap deal with Leicester City for Adrien Silva, but St. Etienne and Bordeaux are also interested in the 29-year-old. Meanwhile, another English club is reportedly preparing a late move for Tielemans, so it could go either way at this point.
Tielemans previously drew interest from Arsenal, before his move to Monaco. He said in 2017 that he turned the chance to move to North London down because he thought he wouldn’t get many first-team opportunities, saying: “I had to be honest with myself and take a look at the midfielders Arsenal have got. They are top-class players.
“I knew that I would not get many first-team chances with them, so I didn’t give any more thought to joining them.”
There were further rumours back in September that an Arsenal move might be back on again. Reports in Italy suggested Arsenal might take advantage of Tielemans’ limited opportunities on the pitch to tempt him away. Since then, the youngster has had plenty more game time though, particularly under Thierry Henry.
The 21-year-old has five goals and one assist in 30 appearances this season, and he impressed for Belgium in limited minutes at the World Cup with a couple of assists last summer.
At this stage, it’s impossible to say whether the unnamed second English club is Arsenal, but it’s certainly possible. We know The Gunners are looking for a versatile midfielder on loan, and Monaco prefer a loan exit for Tielemans. After that, we’ll have to wait and see.
