Sala’s light aircraft, a Piper Malibu piloted by Dave Ibbotson, went missing on Monday when they are believed to have gone down somewhere over the English channel as he traveled to England to complete his move to Cardiff City.

The official search for the pair was called off on Thursday, prompting Sport Cover to set up the crowdfunding page hoping to raise €150k. It has since raised over €250k with a host of donations from footballers including Arsenal’s captain and Manchester City’s Ilkay Gundogan.

Theirs, however, were not the largest donations by any stretch.

PSG’s Adrien Rabiot donated €25k while Dimitri Payet pledged €10k and the FIFPro World Players Union added €5k.
