TMW report that Roma’s director of football, Monchi, is looking for a low-cost addition to his midfield. Top of his list of targets is Elneny, and Monchi is planning to propose a loan-to-buy deal to Arsenal in the current window.

It’s no real surprise that the Serie A side want to take the midfielder on loan first. Elneny has only made eight appearances in all competitions so far this season, and the vast majority of them came in Europa League clashes against the likes of FC Vorskla and Qarabag.

That’s not to say Elneny is incapable of doing a job in the bigger matches. He had a couple of particularly good games in the victory over Chelsea in last year’s League Cup semi-final and the Europa League quarter-final against CSKA Moscow. However, he’s certainly out of practice right now.

This rumour comes days after Elneny posted an emotional tweet thanking Arsenal for his three-year spell so far, which some fans interpreted as a goodbye message. It’s still more likely that the tweet was just the Egyptian celebrating three years at the club, rather than preparing to leave it, but we’ll see what happens in the next two weeks.
