Carl Jenkinson made a surprise start against Blackpool on Saturday night, after initially being left out of the lineup. Laurent Koscielny had to pull out at the last minute, meaning Unai Emery had to reorganise the back four with Stephan Lichtsteiner as a centre-back and Jenkinson on the right.

The 26-year-old had a good game, getting involved in a few Arsenal chances, particularly with the second goal. However, the highlight of his evening was clearly the interaction with the 5,000 Arsenal fans in attendance.

The supporters loved seeing the right-back out there on the pitch giving his all and playing well. They urged him on every time he made a run and sang “Carl Jenko’s a Gooner” repeatedly throughout the match. He responded with a grin and a thumbs up on one or two occasions, which just made the fans get behind him even more.

After the game was over, Jenkinson posted on his Instagram page to say thank you. He wrote: “The love you fans showed me in the second half will live long in the memory. Yes, I am a Gooner, and I always will be.”

Considering Lichtsteiner’s worrying form at the moment, Jenkinson might even start getting more chances when Hector Bellerin isn’t fit. There’s no doubt he’ll give everything to win each game if that’s the case.
