Arsene Wenger is under consideration to take up a new general manager role at Paris Saint-Germain, with sporting director Antero Henrique likely to make way.

According to ESPN, sporting director Antero Henrique has ‘massively disappointed’ PSG’s owners by failing to sign Ajax’s Frenkie de Jong, with FC Barcelona completing the transfer instead. Henrique reportedly knew his future depended on whether he could convince de Jong to move to France, which he failed to do.

As a result, the director’s departure will be finalised in the next few months, and he’ll leave the club by this summer.

Rather than appointing a new sporting director, PSG are planning to absorb the directorial duties into a ‘general manager’ role, which Arsene Wenger is ‘well-positioned’ to fill. Wenger met with head coach Thomas Tuchel recently to discuss the club, and he also caught up with chairman and CEO Nasser Al-Khelaifi in Qatar with beIN Sports.

Despite his guarantees of a return to management at the start of 2019, we’re almost a month into the year without any news of Wenger’s next coaching job. As a result, it seems perfectly possible he’s preparing to take up a different kind of role in football.

For now, Henrique is fully expected to continue fulfilling his transfer market duties until the end of the current window, at least. Napoli’s Allan and Zenit Saint Petersburg’s Leandro Paredes have been heavily linked with moves.
